But it only receives about 45 applications a year. Compare that to about the 3,000 people who want to become a lawyer in Ontario every year, the 4,000 engineering applicants, the 9,000 teaching applicants, the 10,000 would-be real estate agents, and the little over 12,000 26-year-old nursing applicants. And assuming that those 12,000 nursing applicants are no different than any other 26-year-olds and no different than other medical, dental, or law students, wow, that's going to be a lot of work. Every time an item is answered, the computer re-estimates the candidate's ability and selects the next item that is close to the ability estimate. Which each response a candidate's ability estimate gets updated and it become more precise. This is a graphical representation of the adaptive algorithms. The Y-axis is the scale used for both item difficulty and the candidate ability. On this scale, the larger number always indicates a harder question or higher ability. A smaller number will always indicate an easier question or a lower ability. On the other hand, that X-axis is simply a tracker of the number of operational items.

The third and final scoring rule is the rationale scoring rule and this scoring rule applies to items that have tightly paired information. And having a full understanding of the concept requires justification through a rationale. In the simplest form, you can think of this as a nurse must do X because of Y. These items come in two structural forms, a dyad and a triad. Dyads are worth one point and a triad is worth two points. Here's an example of a drop-down rationale. The client is at highest risk for developing X as evidenced by Y. To earn a point, an examinee must get both drop-downs correct.
